Create the next pay period, clone, or correct a stub

Last updated October 18, 2026

Most pay stubs look a lot like the last one. Rather than filling in the builder from scratch each payday, start from a stub you've already made. Your dashboard offers three ways to do that, and none of them changes the original stub.

1. Find the stub on your dashboard

Open your dashboard and choose the business and tax year the stub belongs to. Use the employee search if the list is long. Each row has its main actions on the row itself; the rest are under the More actions menu (the three dots).

2. Roll forward with Create next period

Create next period is the one you'll use most. It opens the builder with everything copied from the original, then moves the pay period and pay date forward by one cycle of the employee's pay frequency — a week for weekly pay, two weeks for biweekly, a month for monthly — and rolls the year-to-date totals up so they include the original stub. If the original covered several pay periods, the new stub continues from the newest of them.

Change only what's different this time, usually hours worked or a one-off bonus, then calculate taxes. A banner at the top of the builder confirms what was carried over.

3. Copy as-is with Clone

Clone copies the stub exactly — same dates, same figures, same year-to-date totals, and every pay period if it covered more than one. It's the right starting point when you need a stub that is nearly identical but isn't simply the next period: a second employee on the same pay, say, or the same structure for a different business.

Because the dates are unchanged, check the pay period and pay date before calculating taxes, or you'll end up with two stubs for the same period.

4. Fix a paid stub with Issue correction

Once a stub is paid for, it's a finished record and can't be edited in place. Issue correction opens a copy for the same pay period, so you can fix whatever was wrong — a misspelled name, the wrong rate, a missed deduction — without moving the dates.

The original paid stub is untouched and stays available to download. The correction is created as a separate pay stub and goes through checkout like any other, so give the corrected version to whoever needs it.

Tip: An unpaid stub is still a draft. For those, use Edit instead — it fixes the stub in place, without creating a second one.

5. Calculate taxes to save the new stub

Whichever action you started from, nothing is saved until you calculate taxes. Federal and state taxes are recalculated from the current details, so they always reflect any change you made — a new rate, extra hours, a different work state. Then preview, check out, and download as usual. See Preview & download your pay stub.

Common questions

Does creating the next period change the original stub?

No. All three actions open a new stub in the builder. The original stays exactly as it was, paid or not.

Why are the year-to-date totals different from what I expected?

Create next period adds the original stub's current-period amounts to its year-to-date totals. If the original's YTD figures were blank or wrong, the new stub inherits that. Fix the YTD figures on the new stub before calculating — see Pay stub totals look wrong.

Do I pay for a correction?

A correction is a new pay stub, so it's priced like one, and plan allowances and credits apply to it as normal. If the original was wrong because of an error on our side rather than in the details entered, contact support with the order number instead.

Can I delete a stub I created by mistake?

An unpaid stub can be deleted from the More actions menu on the dashboard; deletion is permanent. A paid stub can't be deleted, because it's part of a completed order.

Can I roll forward several periods at once?

Each Create next period moves forward one cycle. To produce several consecutive periods, create the next period from the newest stub each time, so every one picks up the latest year-to-date totals.
